Abstract:

Natural disasters and human-made hazards are inevitable in our society. Engineers respond by designing autonomous vehicles that prevent accidence, making earthquake-proof buildings, developing life saving medical equipment. Actuaries answer by designing innovative insurance products to reduce and mitigate the financial losses of car accidents, earthquakes, and make medical care available to those in dire need. Therefore, actuaries are sometimes nicked named “risk engineers”.

This talk aims to illustrate fundamental principles of risk management embedded in equity-linked insurance and how they are utilized to engineer a wide variety of investment guarantees.  It also offers a glimpse of technical development and challenges arising from thelife and annuity industry in the United States.
